Services and functions to maintain
Continuity of learning, research and campus services.
An education estate contains services with different schedules and consequences of interruption. A teaching room, research laboratory and residential building should not automatically receive the same treatment. Start with the activity supported and consider examinations, research commitments, accessibility and the timing of available alternatives.
Relevant assets and dependencies
- Teaching and learning depend on suitable spaces, power, connectivity and digital services.
- Research may depend on specialist equipment, controlled environments, stored materials and continuous monitoring.
- Estates teams, academic departments, accommodation providers and external suppliers share responsibility for continuity.
A laboratory environmental system is impaired
A ventilation or temperature-control fault affects a specialist research area. Continuing normal activity may be inappropriate, while moving it may require equipment or conditions unavailable elsewhere.
Identify affected activities and their dependencies, involve the relevant technical and academic owners and assess safe continuity options. Confirm the required operating conditions before resuming use and review any research consequences.
This example supports discussion of the framework. It describes no measured result or prescribed operating procedure.
Decisions TAR helps inform
- Identify the activities whose timing or specialist requirements make interruption particularly consequential.
- Compare relocation, rescheduling, temporary provision and repairs with the responsible academic or service teams.
- Agree who confirms that a space, system or specialist facility is ready to support its intended activity again.
Evidence of the intended outcome
Select evidence that reflects the service, its agreed limits and the consequences of impairment.
- Teaching, examinations and research activities maintained or interrupted.
- Environmental and functional checks relevant to the affected facilities.
- Recovery arrangements tested with users, including accessibility and continuity of specialist research.
Record the baseline, assumptions and any remaining constraints. Review what the intervention achieved and use the findings to improve future decisions.
